Berlin is unique. Due to its central role as the seat of government over the centuries, German history can be vividly read here. The gigantic growth of the city in the 19th century in its role as an important European industrial metropolis alongside London and Paris is also fascinating. And one hundred years later, global politics came together here: the city was divided by the construction of the Berlin Wall, overcame this deep wound decades later and gradually grew together again.

This fascinating search for historical traces tells of human light and dark sides, of destruction and healing and also, and again, of courage and vision. It is able to give us confidence that positive development is possible even in the most difficult of circumstances.

A walk through the Scheunenviertel – a colorful mix of yesterday and today.

Winding streets from the 18th century, houses of worship from diverse faiths nestled in peaceful neighborhoods, and poignant traces of Jewish history make the past tangible in its rawest form. This district embodies the upheaval of the East after the fall of the Berlin Wall – where avant-garde designer boutiques, lively cafés, and jazz clubs now thrive amid layers of history.
